Join us for a unique workshop on making folk spiders - traditional, colourful decorations made from straw and tissue paper, which used to adorn rural cottages and held symbolic significance, associated with good luck and a bountiful harvest.
In the past, making them was an opportunity to spend time together. Gathered round a single table, whilst chatting and singing, people would create intricately crafted, lightweight structures that moved at the slightest breeze. Today, we want to return to this idea – to slow down, put our phones away and gather round a shared table for a few hours. Instead of rushing about, there will be conversation, colours, pom-poms, straws and hands-on work.
During the workshop, each participant will create their own colourful folk spider, whilst learning about the nature of this traditional form of handicraft. At the end, everyone will take their finished decoration home.
But these workshops are more than just a chance to learn how to make a traditional decoration.
Above all, they are a space for meeting and socialising – a place where people from different backgrounds, with different experiences and cultures, can come together around a shared table. Working together provides a natural opportunity to chat, get to know one another and share experiences, without any formal barriers.
You don’t need any experience in handicrafts. All you need is curiosity, a little patience and a desire to spend a few hours in good company.
